Personal Assistant – Member of Congress

Position Available: Personal Assistant/ADA Aide

Job Summary:

The incumbent is responsible for supporting a Member of Congress with a disability in performing his/her constitutional role as a Member.

Primary Responsibilities/Duties:

Assisting a Female Member of Congress with a disability with Official and Representational


• Accompany and assist a Member of Congress with a disability at all official and representational business events and meetings to facilitate access and participation.
• Assist the Member with Floor activities such as voting.
• Advance all events, hearings and meetings to ensure appropriate ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accommodations are made and maintained, in order for the Member to carry out official duties.
• Collaborate with the scheduling team to facilitate execution of the Member’s daily schedule.
• Travel with the Member between Washington, DC and district, or to other locations in support of official and representational duties.
• Assist the female Member with a disability with meals, medications, and related health and personal care issues including, but not limited to personal hygiene assistance and women’s restroom access.
• Assist the Member during an Emergency.
• Occasionally drive the Member between airports and residence or duty station in support of official and representational travel.
• Occasionally drive the Member of Congress with a disability between residence or duty station and official and representational events/meetings.


High school diploma or equivalent required.  Prior experience as an aide or personal assistant is preferred, but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

• Knowledge of the legislative process, House organization and procedures and federal agencies is preferred, but not required.
• Ability to coordinate logistical issues and perform advance duties for travel, speeches, appearances, etc. as required.
• Ability to juggle multiple tasks in a changing environment.
• Ability to assist the Member with health and personal care, including women’s restroom access.
• Ability to maintain a good working relationship with the Member, staff, and constituents.
• Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and provide proof of driving record annually.
• Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Working Conditions:

• The incumbent will spend periods of time standing.
• Ability to travel and work additional hours including some nights and weekends, as required.
Physical Demands:
• Incumbent must be able to lift 40 pounds unassisted and stand for long periods of time.
• Must be able to move and handle a wheelchair.
