Legislative Fellow – Congressman Jim Himes (D-CT)

Job Summary:  The position is for a Legislative Fellow in the DC Congressional Office.  Primary responsibilities are to facilitate and coordinate responses to a wide range of legislative requests received from the Congressman’s constituents in the 4th Congressional District of Connecticut, and assisting the legislative team, particularly in the areas of veterans’ affairs, defense and national security. Directly reporting to the Legislative Director, the individual holding this position will assist in drafting correspondence to constituents, researching assigned issues, drafting memoranda for the Congressman, and assisting the legislative team regarding bills debated and voted on the House floor. The individual will also work very closely with the office’s Connecticut-based Veterans’ caseworker on casework matters, and will be called on to relay policy changes in real time to assist the veterans of the district with the effects of those changes.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:  The incumbent for this position will serve in a legislative capacity assisting the Congressman and his legislative team.  The Legislative Fellow will be required to research, write and clearly communicate with constituents and stakeholders regarding legislative inquiries.  The successful candidate will become an expert of the legislative process and be tasked with different legislative issues in support of the Congressman and the Legislative Director, including meeting with constituents and stakeholders, drafting memoranda, making vote recommendations, researching and producing legislative initiatives, and working with other Member offices and House committees toward legislative and administrative solutions.  Additionally, the employee will be responsible to perform other duties as assigned by the Congressman, Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, Communications Director and other staff members.

Requirements:  This program is limited to veterans who have served on active duty since September 11, 2001, with less than 20 years of service and have a minimum 30% disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  High school degree required, some college courses preferred but not required.  Professional education through the U.S. military is highly encouraged.  Excellent communication and organizational skills.  Recent experience with and understanding of the U.S. Military and Department of Veterans’ Affairs structure, procedures, and policies.  Service-oriented, positive attitude, and strong teamwork ability.”
