District Communications Manager – Congressman Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE)

SUMMARY:  The Communications Manager supports TV, radio, print and social media activities headquartered in the district office. Working directly with the senior communications director in Washington and the District Office, Director this position is responsible for the development and implementation of integrated strategies to achieve the Congressman’s media and communications goals. A second part of the position is to participate in relevant events in the district in partnership with other district office staff as a representative of the Congressman.

Media plans will include timely engagement with journalists, generation of story ideas and execution of media strategies for media within the district.  Key deliverables include cultivating and maintaining meaningful relationships with members of the state and local media, developing a “news bureau” in which regular and consistent news angles and execution of media outreach occurs on a daily/weekly basis.  The role includes administering new media communications, including the office website, Facebook, Twitter and You Tube activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

– Acts as the key contact and media liaison for the Congressman for all media in the district;
– Develops and implements media, communications, and public relations strategies for the Congressman;
– Writes press releases related to office activities on diverse subjects;
– Collaborates with the Washington DC office to identify ideas, construct language and capture photos of Congressional activities and to update the official website and post regularly on Facebook, Twitter and You Tube accounts;
– Works with District Director to assist in executing state level daily communication plan;
– Remains abreast of current legislative and non-legislative issues relevant to the Congressman;
– Evaluates current events and media reports in the district and the nation for their impact on the Congressman and relevance to constituents;
– Provides ideas and advice on how best to present the Congressman’s actions and legislative activities to the media;
– Oversees the creation and distribution of the Congressman’s newsletters and questionnaires, issue targeted mailings and collaborate in creating an annual report for the office;
– Represent the Congressman at events in the city of Lincoln, including active engagement with constituents as defined by the District Director;
– Willing to learn and grow including ability to accept performance-based feedback;
– Works well under pressure and handles stress;
– Willing to work flexible hours as needed including occasional night or weekend;
– Performs other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

– Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills;
– Excellent communication skills;
– Ability to produce quality written documents under time constraints;
– Understanding of print, broadcast, and online media;
– Willingness to learn or existing knowledge of the legislative process, procedures and organization of the House;
– Curiosity to follow national, state and local current issues and commitment to focus on events in which the Congressman is involved;
– Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in the representation of the Congressman’s position on policy issues and in events in the district or one-on-one with constituents;
– Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others; including strong interpersonal skills;
– Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner;
– Proficiency in “new media” platforms (Facebook, twitter, blogs etc);
– Knowledge of office computer applications.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

– Bachelor’s degree required the ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in English, history, literature or a closely related field or media and communications with a focus on story development and production.  Strong academic credentials as plus.
– Three year commitment to the office is expected.
