Communications Director – Congressman G.K. Butterfield (D-NC)

The Office of Congressman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) seeks a proactive, motivated, and media-savvy Communications Director to manage all aspects of the personal office communications operation.  The position is based in Washington, D.C.

Primary responsibilities include developing and implementing a long-term communications strategy for both national and local media with a focus on local press; pitching stories; responding to media inquiries; managing an active social media and web presence; writing speeches, press releases, talking points, op-eds; and assisting with event planning. The Communications Director will also oversee the constituent correspondence operation.

The Communications Director will also build and maintain excellent relationships with members of the national and local press, including editorial boards. Local press outreach is a priority for the office and the Communications Director must be committed to and skilled in outreach to local media outlets.

Qualified candidates must be excellent writers and editors with on-the-record experience and have the ability to respond to challenging situations quickly and strategically.  A proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks while meeting tight deadlines is required.  The availability to travel to the district and to be reached at non-traditional hours is a must.

The ideal candidate will have political communications experience, be creative, energetic, politically astute and able to work well in a fast-paced environment with both legislative and district staff to promote the Member’s priorities, and complete assigned tasks with limited instruction.

This is not an entry-level position.  Candidates must have at least three years of communications experience.
