Staff Assistant – Senate HELP Committee (majority)

Job Summary:

The Press Secretary manages and coordinates press and media activities, including media contacts, for the Congresswoman and the office, in cooperation with the Communications Director located in the District Office.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Qualifications:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

A bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations or a closely-related field preferred, but not required, including strong academic credentials; and at least two years of congressional experience. Alternatively, a minimum of two years of related experience or training is required.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

·         Understanding of and ability to manage print, broadcast, and online media;

·         Strong new media knowledge of how to manage and maximize the Congresswoman’s new media presence;

The Majority staff of the Senate Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management, the Federal Workforce, and the District of Columbia is seeking current college students or recent college graduates for an unpaid administrative summer internship.  The jurisdiction of the Subcommittee includes federal workforce personnel systems, benefits, rights, and protections; management and efficiency of federal programs; national security staffing; the District of Columbia; and other issues. House Democrat Seeks Tech Policy Fellow.

A member of the House Judiciary and Armed Services Committees seeks a Technology Policy Fellow to assist legislative staff with initiatives pertaining to digital privacy and cybersecurity.

A law degree or an advanced degree in a relevant field is strongly preferred, but not required.  An undergraduate degree in a relevant field is required.

Candidates should have an in-depth understanding of digital privacy and/or cybersecurity issues and a basic understanding of the legislative process in the U.S. Congress.

Candidate should be expected to provide general support, research, and writing support to the legislative staff across all issue areas.  This position is unpaid and minimum time commitment may be required.

Specific duties will include:

- Assist legislative staff with research and development of legislation related to digital privacy and cybersecurity.

- Monitor breaking developments and longer-term trends in the press and social media regarding issues at the “electronic frontier.”

- Work closely with advocacy groups in Washington and across the country to develop policy proposals.

- Engage executive branch agencies to conduct oversight of the Federal government’s technology, surveillance, and cybersecurity policies.
