Caseworker/Veterans Field Representative – Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (D-WA)

Job Summary: The position is for a Case Worker/Veterans Field Representative in the District Congressional Office.  Primary responsibilities are to facilitate and coordinate responses to a wide range of requests received from constituents and providing liaison between the Congresswoman’s office and the various veteran’s organizations in the district. District case workers help constituents interact with administrative and government agencies by acting as facilitators, ombudsmen and, in some cases, advocates. The individual holding this position is also responsible for keeping the Congresswoman current on issues of concern and systemic problems that may require her involvement to correct the situation.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:  Acts as the representative for the Congresswoman within his or her area of responsibility including answering case work correspondence, meeting with constituents, verbal communications with constituents, and serving as a liaison with federal, district, and local agencies; Handles case work assignments and communicates clearly with constituents about what can and cannot be done on their behalf by the district office; Assesses case work for problems requiring legislative action and makes recommendations to the District Director and Chief of Staff; Learns the laws, regulations and intricacies affecting a constituent’s case as well as the procedures and structure of Congresswoman DelBene’s office regarding casework and employee obligations, as outlined in the Office Handbook and the House of Representatives’ Ethics Manual; Screens and refers cases, when appropriate, to other district offices; Logs in all incoming and outgoing mail and incoming telephone calls relating to casework; Prepares periodic reports for the District Director on pending cases and district activities in his or her assigned issue areas; Continually screens active cases and acts as liaison with constituents to ensure that their cases are handled in a responsive manner; Represents the Congresswoman at meetings and functions hosted by local Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) to gather information on items of interest to constituents, provide updates on the activities of the Congresswoman on topics of importance to the VSOs, and report on recommendations and or concerns raised at the various meetings for review by Congresswoman DelBene; Maintains a good working relationship with the Congresswoman, staff and constituents; Accepts performance-based criticism and direction; Meets attendance requirements as established by the office; Works well under pressure and handles stress; Works a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and weekends; and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements: This program is limited to veterans who have served on active duty since September 11, 2001, with less than 20 years of service and have a minimum 30% disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Additional requirements include:  High school degree required, some college courses preferred but not required. Professional education through the U.S. military is highly encouraged; Excellent communication and organizational skills; Recent experience with and understanding of the U.S. Military and Department of Veterans’ Affairs structure, procedures, and policies; Professional telephone skills; Strong oral and written communication skills; Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to prioritization of and recommendations on appointments; Proficiency in word processing; Strong organizational and filing skills; Thoroughness and careful attention to detail; Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others; Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner; Ability to work a flexible schedule that regularly includes weekends and evenings.  This position often requires 40+ hours per week and qualifies for federal employee benefits.  Applicants must have a valid Washington state driver’s license and vehicle.
